Disney+ Monthly Library Breakdown: August 2021
Fewer Sharks... fewer everything.

August Library Breakdown

August Library Breakdown

Here's what's coming in August to Disney+ - complete with our exclusive stats and charts!
27 library titles are scheduled for August but they’re mostly current / in-season series. The overall monthly average finally went up due to Disney’s new in-season episode strategy.

UPDATE August 23: As August wraps up the total number dropped from 27 to 26 due to a no-show. Current numbers are updated in the September post.

The August list is out which means it’s time to revisit the Disney Plus Library Breakdown. If you’re looking for an in-depth explanation of how these numbers are reached, the scale I use, the color-codes, and everything in between, check out the first edition – July 2021. You may also notice I revamped the chart so that the months are now lined up year-to-year in columns. Under this new view, it’s possible to see that Disney seems to follow a similar monthly quantity. Marchs are beyond terrible. July’s are great. What a weird thing!

Disney+ Library Adds Per Month

The month of August is scheduled to be yellow. Without all the SharkFest content we knew it wouldn’t be green again. I’m going to predict there won’t be another green month until November or December but I’d love to be wrong and have Disney drop tons of missing library Halloween content in September.

Disney+ added 352 library titles in 2020 and 191 thus far in 2021. The monthly average in 2020 was 29.3. The monthly average in 2021 is 23.9. The 2021 numbers assume all August titles arrive.

Monthly Averages

Moving up, 2021 average. Sadly… the 2020 library average is not gonna ever happen again under this leadership.

Past 5 Month’s Library Titles Categories

Nat Geo World

Not much to say – a boring month with Nat Geo once again #1 and 0 vintage titles , 0 classic animated shorts, etc. It’s good that Life Below Zero Next Generation has finally been relisted after its February no-show.

Ongoing Streaks

List of Disney+ Bad and Good monthly streaks. Sadly, all bad right now.

For accessibility and SEO, here is a text version of this graphic:

Ongoing Bad Streaks

Last Walt-era serial added: November 2019 (Launch) (21 months)

Last Disneyland episode added: July 2020 (13 months)

(Mouseketeers at Disney World and The Pre-Opening Report)

Last non-Disney Channel / XD cartoon added: July 2020 (13 months)

(Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!)

Last vintage (1920-1970) animated short added: September 2020 (11 months)

(Trick or Treat)

Last Disney Channel / XD library live action series added: April 2021 (4 months)

(Liv & Maddie, Adventures in Wonderland)

Last Disney Channel / XD library cartoon added: May 2021 (3 months)

(Special Agent Oso)

Last Playhouse Disney / Disney Junior library series added: May 2021 (3 months)

(Special Agent Oso)

Last pre-1990 Disney title added: June 2021 (2 months)

(The Happiest Millionaire (1967))

Ongoing Good Streaks

None ☹

Disney Channel Missing Library Progress

I revamped these graphics this month with new colors and fonts! Surprise, Disney just cemented their 2nd longest gap without Disney Channel / XD live-action library series! Sigh. News recently broke that Disney continues to license their missing titles to Hotstar only – Penn Zero (2014) joined PrankStars (2011) in Thailand and Malaysia this past month!

Past 5 Month’s Library Titles By Category

At least August is better than May and June. July and April still beat it. April will probably be the “best” month since launch and may never be topped. It was glorious variety and quantity. Look at how evenly distributed all those colors are… Now look at the last two month’s green. It’s ridiculous. Is this Nat Geo+ or Disney+?

Final August Thoughts:

UPDATE after the August 1st video update: “Introduction to Us Again” and “Shark Attack Files Episode 6” are added to the library title count. Cop out since SAF E6 was scheduled for July originally and the other is likely an Extra.

Dan in Real Life (2007) returning is pretty awesome to see. One of the VERY few Touchstone films Disney felt like giving us.

The batches of in-season episodes are now accounting for HALF of the monthly library adds. Wow. At least they’re keeping shows up to date! I swear, if they could do this + add 20 extra titles a month in a 1st of the month content drop like all other services do, they’d be golden. Don’t add in-season episodes in place of other content. Supplement the other stuff!

It’s weird Disney is doing another weekly Nat Geo show (Cesar Milan: Better Human Better Dog (2021). I feel like they need to do ALL the Nat Geo shows this way or just make the show a Disney+ original. Why not do this with Mickey Mouse Funhouse (2021) or Spidey and His Amazing Friends (2021) too? Instead, as my editor Greg noted – they do one show this way at a time. It seems like they’re straddling the line between taking service seriously and not. Go all the way, guys! I would much prefer they made these “originals” and then instead aired them after the fact on TV with a “Disney+ Original” logo in the bottom right of the screen. THAT would be awesome. Younger did that on Paramount+.

With AFV Animal Edition (2021) will we ever get more AFV? We’re missing 2/3 of its seasons!

This month again has no “main feature” library title. I don’t think Cruella counts since it was already there as Premier Access.

Yet again no library Disney Channel or cartoons older than the past 2 years and yet again the 8 missing Disney XD shows remain missing. I wish they’d just FINISH that library entirely. They’re so damn close!

Spin (2021) and Descendants Royal Wedding (2021) not being present are insanely bad news. This looks like the October DCOM Under Wraps (2021) won’t make it to Disney+ before Halloween. Same for Christmas…Again?! (2021) in December. Wtf? I did NOT see that coming. I really believed they’d collapse the 8-month DCOM window as much as they have the series but if that was the case Spin would have been streaming within 2 weeks of its premiere… Uh… hopefully things change in October…

Some original highlights: Diary of a Future President (2019) season 2 premiere is a full binge drop. Wowsers. What If (2021) is coming as well!

September Predictions:

Tomorrowland (2015) and Spooky Buddies (2011) are confirmed by a landing page – two of the few remaining dates pre-installed back at launch.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) is confirmed through the summer of streaming campaign announcement.

Hopefully some of the August snubs will be added such as Bridge to Terabithia (2007), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), or Jungle Book (1994).

Olaf Retellings had originally leaked as an August release but when they bumped all the Friday series back to Wednesdays it fell into September. We should know more about this series in the next few weeks and get an official confirmation!
